What I think distinguishes architecture from other types of art is it penetrates into our daily lives: every moment we walk on, sit on, lean on, lie on objects built.

I took this photo at Shinsegae Department Store main branch in Namdaemun.

내 생각에, 다른 예술 분야와 건축을 구분짓는 가장 큰 차이는

건축은 우리의 일상에 깊이 침투해있다라는 것이다.

매 순간 우리는 지어진 건축물 위에서 걷고, 그 위에 앉고, 기대고, 눕는다.

Korea-US FTA 한미자유무역협정

Early this morning, South Korean and the US agreed on revision of their free trade agreement and about 24 hours later, it is scheduled signing of the FTA in Washington, D.C. The Korean Alliance Against the FTA gathered at Gwanghwamun Crossroads where link to the US Embassy in Seoul and 14,000 combat police were commited in case violence occurs.

I used to only blame the police due to their brutal and excessive force against demonstrator, however, since having the critial view on the order and obedience structure, I've come to consider the combat police as kind of victims of this structure. It's true that protesters are our family, neighbours and colleagues, but the combat police are also our sons and brothers.

오늘 이른 아침 한미FTA 추가 협상이 타결되었고,

약 24시간 후면 워싱턴에서 협정문 서명식을 갖게 된다.

한미 FTA 저지 범국민운동본부는

미국대사관으로 이어지는 광화문 사거리에 집결하였고

폭력사태에 대비해 14,000명의 전투 경찰이 투입되었다.

시위자들에게 가하는 잔인하고 과도한 진압때문에

예전에는 전경들만 일방적으로 비난을 했었는데,

명령과 복종 체제에 대한 비판적 시각을 갖게 된 이후로는

전경들도 이 체제의 희생자란 생각이 들게되었다.

시위참가자들도 우리의 가족이자 이웃, 직장 동료인 것은 사실이지만,

전경들도 우리의 아들이자 형제인 것이다.

Mobile Phone Shop 핸드폰 가게

This is a mobile phone shop at Jongno. The sign '휴대폰(hyudae phone)' literally means 'portable/mobile phone', but we more frequently use an equivalent, 'hand phone.' Wikipedia says the term, handphone, came from Singapore/Malaysia, which I'm not sure. I just wanted to show how terribly the shop displayed advertisements.

사진에 보이는 곳은 종로에 있는 한 핸드폰 가게다.

간판에 보이는 '휴대폰'이라는 글자는 한국에서 mobile을 가리키는 말인데,

우리는 '핸드폰(hand phone)'을 더 많이 쓴다.

Wikipedia에는 핸드폰이란 말이 싱가폴 내지는 말레이시아에서 왔다고 하는데

실제인지 잘 모르겠다.

이 가게가 광고물을 얼마나 지저분하게 붙였는지 보여주고 싶었다.

Newsstand 신문가판대

Evening papers placed at a newsstand.

12 different daily newspapers are piled in a row.

As you may notice, most of Korean newspaper names have 4 syllables.

신문가판대에 놓여진 석간들.

일간지 12종류가 한 줄에 놓여있다.

사진에서 볼 수 있듯이 대부분의 한국 신문들 이름은 4음절이다.

Seoul Metro 서울메트로

On 22nd May, Seoul Metro operating the underground line no. 1 to 4 announced that the total number of passengers who have used these lines since the first nine stations of line no. 1 were built have reached 30 billion. This number means that the whole population of about 10 million in Seoul have used 3,000 times on the average.

Seoul underground has line no. 1 to 8 and additionally a couple of arterial subway lines. Currently, line no. 9 is under construction. Seoul underground used by 3.97 million passengers a day is like a blood vessel of Seoul as Metro of Paris.

The station on the photo is Jonggak in line no. 1, which I use for commuting during weekdays, and people are waiting for the underground after work.

지난 5월 22일, 지하철 1~4호선을 관리하는 서울메트로는

1974년 8월 15일 1호선 9개역을 개통한 이래로

수송인원 300억명을 돌파했다고 발표했다.

이 수치는 인구 천만명의 서울인구 1인당

평균 지하철을 3,000번을 이용한 꼴이라고 했다.

서울의 지하철은 1호선부터 8호선까지 있고,

그 외에도 추가 간선이 있고 현재 9호선이 공사중이다.

하루 평균 397만명이 이용한다는 서울 지하철은

빠리의 메트로만큼 서울의 혈관이라 할 만 하다.

사진을 찍은 곳은 평일에 내가 매일 출퇴근을 하는 1호선 종각역의 퇴근 풍경이다.

Korean War 한국전쟁

Today is the 57th Anniversary of Korean War. (Korean people mostly use '6.25(yukio in Korean)' rather than the term, 'Korean War' according to what we learnt from history classes. At least none of my teachers call it Korean war.) On TV morning news, they were making a fuss about the survey result that 53.2% of 20's doesn't know the year of the outbreak of the war. Though I'm in 20's in western age, because we are the generation who was taught years and groups excessively during Korean history class, it was surprising to me too that about a half of my generation is not aware of this kind of basic year. However, shouldn't it be more astonishing, not just unawareness of a year but our insufficient awareness of the tragedy still going on this peninsula?

오늘은 6.25가 발발한 지 57년 되는 날이다.

오늘 아침 뉴스에서는 20대의 53.2%가

6.25 전쟁의 발발연도를 모른다는 여론조사가 나왔다고

충격이라며 아침부터 호들갑을 떨었다.

난 서양식 나이로 20대이지만 내가 학교 다닐 때만 해도

한국사를 배울 때 연도와 소속 단체를 과하다 싶을 정도로 배웠기 때문에

이런 기본적인 연도를 모른다는 것은 솔직히 놀라웠다.

하지만 더 놀라야 할 것은 연도의 인지도가 아니라

이 땅의 끝나지 않은 이 비극에 대해

우리의 대다수가 충분히 인지하지 못하고 있다는 것 아닐까?

New Pepsi 새로운 펩시

First of all, I have to say I have nothing to do with Pepsi. Pepsi has recently brought new package design and I'm curious what Pepsi's challenge will lead to. This photo was taken on the underground and I think the idea of hanging the can on the metal strap of handles is quite interesting. How did they do that, by the way?

우선 난 펩시와는 아무 상관 없는 사람임을 밝히는 바이다.
최근에 펩시는 새로운 패키지 디자인을 들고 나왔는데,
펩시의 도전이 어떤 결과를 가져올지 궁금하다.
이 사진은 지하철 내에서 찍은 것인데,
손잡이의 금속 연결 부분에 캔을 달아놓은 아이디어가 기발해보인다.
그나저나 저걸 어떻게 달았을까?

Hongdae 홍대

In Korea, most of universities' names are called simply with the first syllable like Yondae from Yonsei Daehakgyo(university in Korean), Budae Busan Daehakgyo, Kyedae Kyemyung Daehakgyo etc. Hongik Daehakgyo is also called Hongdae and the area around this school is famous especially for dance clubs and live music clubs, and also a place for artists and young people.

The spot where I took this photo is in the middle of so-called "Street making you want to walk on", which is located between the subway station and Hongdae. The bar stalls which used to dominate the street were forcibly removed and instead this kind of sculpture and benches were placed.

When you are in Seoul, I recommend you should visit Hongdae. During day, go to hip cafés and restaurants and at night go clubbing or just wandering is also good enough.

한국에서는 대부분의 대학교 이름를 간편하게 부를 때 첫 자만 따서 부른다.

연세대는 연대, 부산대는 부대, 계명대는 계대 이렇게.

홍익대도 역시 홍대로 불리는데,

홍대는 특히 댄스 클럽과 라이브 뮤직 클럽들의 집합지이자,

예술가들의 장, 젊음의 장소이기도 하다.

사진을 찍은 곳은 지하철역에서 홍대 정문으로 이어지는 길에 있는,

일명 "걷고 싶은 거리"인데 원래는 포장마차들이 있었던 것을 강제로 철거시키고

이런 조형물들을 세우고 벤치들을 놓았다.

서울에 있다면 홍대를 꼭 한 번 가보길 권장해본다.

낮에는 트렌디한 카페와 식당을 가고,

밤에는 클럽을 가거나 그냥 거리를 배회해도 좋다.

E-Mart 이마트

The USA has Wal-Mart, France has Carrefour, and Korea has E-Mart.

Hypermarket is a concept of large supermarkets imported from Western countries, but Korea local markets put lots of various efforts to fulfill picky Korean customers' demands.

In contrast with this, adhering to their global standards, multinational companies failed to meet Korean customers' taste and eventually Wal-Mart and Carrefour sold their stores to E-Mart and Homever respectively in 2006.

미국에 월마트, 프랑스에 까르푸가 있다면, 한국에는 이마트가 있다.

하이퍼마켓은 원래 서양에서 들어온 대형 유통 매장이지만,

한국의 기업들은 까다로운 한국의 소비자들에게

만족을 안겨주기 위해 다각도의 노력을 기울였다.

이에 비해 글로벌 스탠더드를 앞세워

한국 소비자들만의 특별한 구미를 적절히 맞추지 못한 외국계 할인점들은

결국 한국 기업들에게 잠식당했고.

2006년에 월마트는 이마트에, 까르푸는 홈에버에 각각 매각되었다.

Rainy Season 장마

The rainy season started from today.

Although it comes every year, never skipping,

we have a flood disaster every year too.

I wish the disaster forget to happen this year...

오늘부터 장마가 시작되었다.

한 해도 거르지 않고 늘 오는 장마인데,

매해 대형 수해 사고가 난다.

올해는 부디 거르고 갈 수 있기를...

Please Dont Durty

It's been a while since I took this photo and I've once posted this story on my previous personal web page but I've always wanted to talk about this post once again. In Korea, where English is not just a communication language but an object itself, there are numerous cases of laughing and crying because of English. Due to an obsession with English, occasionally 'Broken English/Konglish' happens and I get embarrassed sometimes but also feel sorry at other times. And in case of the photo above, it was definitely the moment of laughter considering it was rather cute.

That place is on the corner of a street where rubbish is put out. Given the fact that there are many foreign workers in my neighbourhood, I think the owner of this property wanted to give warning to them so sprayed the sentence on the wall. It wouldn't be a big deal though it is ungrammatical because there's no one who don't understand what it means.

이 사진을 찍은지는 좀 오래되었고 예전의 개인 홈페이지에도 올린 적이 있지만

언제고 다시 한 번 이야기를 하고 싶었다.

영어가 단순한 의사소통의 수단이 아닌 그 자체가 목적이 되어버린 한국에서는

영어 때문에 울고 영어 때문에 웃는 일이 허다하다.

영어에 의한 강박증 때문에 가끔은 '엉터리 영어'가 탄생할 때도 있는데,

당황스러울 때도 있고 안쓰러울 때도 있지만

위 사진의 경우는 귀여워서 크게 웃었다.

저 곳은 골목의 한 구석, 쓰레기를 내다놓는 곳인데,

외국인 노동자가 많이 살고 있는 우리 동네의 특성 상

그들에게 한 소리를 하고자 스프레이로 벽에다 쓴 것이다.

좀 틀리면 어떤가, 저 뜻을 모를 이는 없을테니.

Bloomsday Celebration 2007 블룸스데이

It's a bit late to post this daily photo but I shouldn't delay any longer. Last Saturday, at Irish Ambassador's Residence, it was held 'Bloomsday Celebration 2007.' For what this event means, let's see the description on the invitation:

"16 June, 2007 marks the 103rd anniversary of the date on which a young Dublin medical student named James Joyce had his first date with young Galway woman named Nora Barnacle who later was to become his wife. That date was so significant for Joyce that, when writing his famous novel Ulysses years later - a novel which attempts to recount the Odysseus of Homer in the snap shot of one day in the life of Dublin in the early twentieth century –, Joyce not surprisingly chose this date for his novel.

In recent years this date has become the focus for the annual international celebration known as “Bloomsday” in honour of Leopold Bloom, the novel’s leading character."

It was a truly beautiful evening with excellent speakers' brilliant reading, the cool wind and nice food. The picture is shrimp cocktail catered by Hyatt Hotel.

사진 올리기에는 조금 늦었지만 더 늑장 부려서는 안 되겠다. 지난 토요일 주한아일랜드 대사관저에는 2007 블룸스데이 행사가 있었다. 어떤 내용의 행사인지는 초대장에 적혀있던 아래 내용을 참조하시라.

"2007년 6월 16일은 더블린의 젊은 의대생이었던 제임스 조이스가 후에 그의 부인이 된 노라 바나클이라는 골웨이 아가씨와 첫 데이트를 한 날로 103번째 해를 기념하게 되었다. 조이스에게 있어서 의미심장한 이 날짜를, 수년 후 그의 대표작이 된 '율리시즈'(호머의 '오디세우스'를 20세기 초 더블린에서의 일상의 한 나날을 풀어내듯이 묘사한 소설)에 등장시킨 것은 당연한 일이리라.

근래에 들어 이 날짜는 매년 열리는 전세계적인 행사의 핵심이 되었는데, 소설의 주인공인 레오폴드 블룸을 기려 블룸스데이가 되었다."

그 날 밤은 소설을 굉장히 맛깔스럽게 읽은 낭독가들과 시원한 바람, 근사한 음식이 어우러진 아름다운 밤이었다. 사진은 하얏트 호텔 출장 부페팀이 마련한 새우 칵테일이다.

Summer in the City 도심 속의 여름

'Vacances Mobiles' hanging from the ceiling at Lotte Department Store main branch. Looking at the windsurf boards at one of the most crowded places in the city, I think they don't encourage the desire to go to the sea, rather console the city dwellers who can't (or who find difficult to) go to the sea.

롯데백화점 본점의 지하 천정에 매달린 '바캉스 모빌'.

도시에서 사람이 가장 붐비는 곳 중 하나인 이 곳에서 윈드 서핑 보드를 보니

바다로 향해 가고 싶다는 열망을 자극한다기 보다는

바다로 가지 못하는(혹은 가기 어려운) 도시인들을 위로한다는 생각이 든다.
